Keep on Running!
The dust has finally settled, muscles have finished aching and most members of the team have now packed away their running gear! The events from the Sunday 8th July 2018 have been written into the Whitesides history books!
The final amount raised for our chosen charity, Haven Breast Cancer, was a fantastic £738.25. The money raised will go to helping support those diagnosed with breast cancer and their families. Everyone here at Whitesides would like to say a massive thank you to all the family, friends and clients who sponsored the team. Their support will go a long way to helping a charity that is close to us here in the office.
Our Story
Our story begins on what was possibly the hottest Sunday morning of the year, the team assembled at the pre-arranged meeting point of the Radisson Hotel, where Haven provided us somewhere cool to prepare, but also recover afterwards.
Varying amounts of preparation went into the race, due to the different commitments team members had. Unfortunately, due to injury, Leo had to withdraw before the event, but luckily Sarah’s husband stepped in to take his place at the last minute, thank you Russell!
It was quite clear before the race that there was going to be little protection from the heat in terms of shade on the course after leaving the city centre in the first 2km. In the build up to the start, Adam pushed his way to the front in hopes of escaping the crowds, and in his pursuit of qualifying for the 2020 Olympics, while the rest of the team hunted for some shade, and Sean hunted for Pikachu and Snorlax (Pokemon).
The route was lined with people all the way out and back on Kirkstall Road providing much encouragement for the team, which was much needed given the weather, and Joanne cheered everyone over the finish line in front of the Town Hall! Regular water stations and a cool run through shower at 8km offered excellent refreshment for all runners and fortunately the first aid stations were not required by the team…..just.
The Results
Once the final team results had been published the team managed to finish 52 out of 59 in the corporate challenge with a top 3 combined time of 2:52:31, which for a first attempt is a brilliant result. The team’s results are shown below, unfortunately Adam missed out on Olympic qualification, but Sean did manage to catch a really high-level Pikachu (every cloud!)
