Why Every Business Owner Needs a One-Page Business Plan

Most business owners don’t have a business plan.

Or at least, they don’t have one they actually use.

What they do have is a document they spent three days writing when applying for funding in 2021 that’s now sitting in a folder called “Final Final Version V4”.

A one-page business plan is different, it’s quick to create, easy to update and, most importantly, something you’ll actually look at.

Why Most Business Plans Don’t Work

The trouble with traditional business plans is that they’re often written for someone else, a bank manager, a lender, an investor and once they’ve served their purpose, they rarely get opened again.

But a business plan shouldn’t be a document you create and forget about, it should be a tool that helps you make decisions, stay focused and keep the business moving in the right direction.

It is far more user friendly when everything fits on a single page.

What Should a One-Page Business Plan Include?

The best one-page business plans are surprisingly simple.

Start by asking yourself what success looks like over the next 12 months, not just higher turnover, but what you’re actually trying to achieve.

  • More profit?
  • Better cash flow?
  • More time away from the business?
  • A stronger team?

Next, identify the handful of priorities that will help you get there, if you could only focus on three to five things this year, what would have the biggest impact?

Then think about the numbers you’ll track, the challenges you can see coming and the actions you’ll take over the next 90 days.

That’s really all a business plan needs to do, help provide clarity on where you’re going and how you’ll get there.

Remember to Keep It Simple

Many business owners over complicate planning because they feel they should have all the answers, the reality is that no plan survives a year completely unchanged. Markets shift, customers change, opportunities appear and priorities evolve.  This is why a simple plan that gets reviewed every month is far more valuable than a detailed plan that’s never looked at again.
